"You can look at
war as a massing of arms and matérial and troops, but
you can also see it as something else--as a delicate web of
interwoven choices made by human beings, made out of a certain
consciousness. The decision to order an attack, the choice
to obey or disobey an order, to fire or not to fire a weapon.
Armies and, indeed, any culture that supports them must convince
the people that all the decisions are made already, and they
have no choice. But that is never true." The Fifth
Sacred Thing" by Starhawk

Peace,
in the sense of the absence of war is of little value to someone
who is dying of hunger or cold. It will not remove the pain
of torture inflicted on a prisoner of conscience. It does not
comfort those who have lost their loved ones in floods caused
by senseless deforestation in a neighboring country. Peace can
only last where human rights are respected, where the people
are fed and where individuals and nations are free -

"The choice is not
between violence and nonviolence, but between nonviolence
and nonexistence." Martin Luther
King
|
Dear
Friends,
For
Rachael, and other fellow activists who have been
casually killed while offering an alternative to senseless
violence.
I am perplexed by the callousness of those who would
deny worth of cause to all but the well armed, suited
and protected, paid military persons entwined in conflict.
I
hear the "GOD BLESS OUR SOLDIERS AND....etc."
Makes me wonder what kind of god they are ordering
to do their bidding. Like, "God bless OUR guys
but forget the rest of the poor slobs who I disagree
with. Because, god, if you bless them, then you are
off my prayer list".
I
fail to comprehend the heart that cannot, or chooses
not to be grateful for anyone who would follow their
yearning for peace and place themselves between violence
and the innocents.
It
is as if there are those who are "anti-non-violence.
As if they truely savour violence. We seem to not
be able to rise above our innate frailities that Darwin
exposed when he defined the "origin of the species".
Pecking order stuff. I can only here the "God
Blessers of the warriors" saying, "Darwin
was a commie pinko". Yet, they personify his
doctrine. Homosapiens that have not even risen above
our cousins, the gentle mountain gorillas. Yet they
see themselves as righteous and having great wisdom.
I
suggest that if you drool at the sight of WMD's being
hauled down "main street" America while
marching bands create harmonious blarings to exhalt
their glory, you are one step away from the vine.
And
to you who would deny humanity and deem valueless
the lives of others who you see as heathens, primitives,
less than civilized, I suggest you remember your own
miserable childhood. For if you had been truely loved
and nurtured, your heart would be breaking because
of the tragic folly called war. The folly that justifies
rendering its' victims homeless and shattered.
I imagine Rachael and those who had joined her effort
must have been well loved and cared for by families
who respected life. For from the seeds of those beginnings
grew courageous, brave and most caring human beings.
The world is better because they exist.
"Abou Bin Adam, may his tribe increase, awoke
one night from a deep dream of peace..."
Look
up the rest if you're intersted.
I suggest that if as much effort by this country of
wealth and resource, were placed on making peace as
is placed on making and nurturing war, nothing could
prevent it from happening.
Thank you Rachael.
D. Moore
