"You
can look at war as a massing of arms and matérial and
troops, but you can also see it as something else--as a delicate
web of interwoven choices made by human beings, made out of
a certain consciousness. The decision to order an attack,
the choice to obey or disobey an order, to fire or not to
fire a weapon. Armies and, indeed, any culture that supports
them must convince the people that all the decisions are made
already, and they have no choice. But that is never true."
The Fifth Sacred Thing" by Starhawk

Questions - What is
happening in your local library? What does the future
have in store for you as a patron of MCPL? Find
out if an automatic check out (like the one in Kmart)
is part of the "Strategic Plan" and why
the current plans are mingling staff from reference
with AV, Find out about the new user fee for those
who live outside of Monroe County, and when it will
go into affect.Attend a public board meeting on
the third Thursday of any month The next meeting
is October 16th in the Elletsville Branch from 4:00
pm to 6:00 pm. Cann't attend a meeting - watch
CATS (channel 3) and if so motivated, call or
write the director of MCPL or the Board of Directors.
* I encourage
you to please look at the Library Board Meetings
over the last three months, then visit the main
library and see what questions you have about the
"Strategic Plan". I just cannot see how
taking knowledgeable staff and diluting their ability
to maintain themselves as superior reference sources
by spreading them around as a means for maintaining
or increasing quality.

Every
gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket
fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those
who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and
are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending
money alone; it is spending the sweat of its laborers,
the genius of its scientists, the hope of its children.

THE
WILD SHADOWS
BY Ikranagara
I heard the voice
of an observer being frightened by
the shadows dancing wildly
parading during a midnight
and he asked me,
Are those wild shadows
the phantoms of the remainder
of those who
came a long way from Alabama
in the time of the assassination
of Kennedy in Texas in the last century?
Since I didn't understand, then I said,
I don't know
The observer whispered to me,
Come on in to my memory
and see them for yourself
I entered as he wished
And, in a corner
of the observer's memory
I found the wild shadows
of the segregationist politics supporters
dancing wildly parading
and filling the long road in Alabama
Then, to the observer,
I said,
No wonder you're frightened, Sir
I heard again the
voice of the observer
asking me,
Now, couldn't you see
that those wild shadows were the phantoms
of the remainder
of those who
came a long way
from Alabama
in the time of the assassination
of Kennedy in Texas in the last century?
This time I had the answer,
No, Sir!
They were the shadows
of the phantoms
of the remainder
of those who
came from the inside of the human violent beast
inhabiting inside every one of us for centuries
a long way back
to when we were not even human yet
and they're still intact
inside us
The observer asked me if he could enter my memory
I said,
Please, by all means
And he did so.
Finally he said
to me,
No wonder!
Because, you have a different map
your address is not in the US

Dear
People,
In the previous issue, Green Dove announced that our
focus would be on how we can we develop a culture
of peace. So much of our attention has been placed
upon war and destruction, so little upon peacemaking.
Our culture, both locally and globally will only be
able to work toward peace by training ourselves to
focus on peacemaking. There is no way around it. We
are the peacemakers. Every thought we hold and release
into the world, every action performed, contributes
to structuring world social and political patterns.
Steps
toward becoming a culture of peace can only begin
through our personal efforts. As individuals working
toward peaceful lifestyles, we develop relationships
that will create a structure to build upon. The question
of how to create a different world has been asked.
Green Dove looks forward to sharing your ideas, thoughts,
poems, letters, book reviews, songs, articles, recipes,
anything on the subject of creating peace.
On
another note, quite a few people in town commented
on not being able to find a copy of the Green Dove
Peace Magazine. The last issue was on-line only. Green
Dove was not printed because it did not have the $200
needed to cover printing cost. If each person who
enjoys Green Dove would send in a donation of $10
or more the problem would be solved. A minimum donation
of $25 and you will be notified when the new issue
is published to the web, and have the magazine mailed
to your home, whenever it's in print.

BIOPIRATE BOOTY & FRANKENFOODS FOR ALL Thanks to
the World Trade Organization (WTO) and a host of "free
trade" agreements, it is completely legal for a large
corporation to patent and own the genes of individual plants,
animals, indigenous medicines and even humans. The WTO states
that all member countries must honor all patents filed in
the U.S. or face economic sanctions, also known as cross retaliation.
In other words, the U.S. can legally impose economic sanctions
on Mexico if the Mayan people use their traditional herbal
medicines without paying royalties to transnational corporations
like Dow Chemical, which now owns patents on some of these
thousand- year- old remedies. Heck, it's even legal to patent
the genes of the shaman who gives you that medicine. Since
the mid-90s, there has been a deluge of U.S. patent applications
on human genes of tribal peoples all over the world. Thanks
to the WTO, even your genes can be legally owned by corporations
or individuals. And now the Bush Administration plans to use
a secret trade tribunal of the WTO to force Frankenfoods down
the throats of Europeans and consumers worldwide. Ticked off?
Do something about it:

CHILDREN ARE ACTUALLY GUINE PIGS! Despite a landslide
of public comments opposing the idea, the USDA has decided
to begin bombarding school lunches with massive doses of radiation.
Food safety groups slammed the decision, saying the action
turns schools into the world's foremost purveyors of inadequately
tested irradiated food, forcing millions of children to serve
as guinea pigs. Countless studies have shown that irradiated
foods lose nutrients, acquire known carcinogens, and contain
new chemical compounds unique to irradiated foods. Local school
boards will have the choice of refusing this dubious gift-which
is actually more expensive. Spread the word and call your
school board members now! Food Irradiation - Irradiated fruits
and vegetables benefit the packer and grocer, not the farmer
or consumer. The consumer receives an inferior product that
appears "fresh," but has depleted vitamins and enzymes.

FORCE FED FUNKY FODDER President Bush's recently decided
to file a complaint to the World Trade Organization against
the EU, based on the "problem" that European consumers
are freely able to choose not to eat genetically mutated foods.
The U.S. filed the complaint and was only able to whip four
other nations of the world into supporting it: Argentina,
Australia, Egypt and Canada. Unfortunately for G.W., Egypt
has now withdrawn its support of Bush's aggressive stance
against the EU, citing "the need to preserve adequate
and effective consumer and environmental protection."
Bush added fuel to the fire by blaming world hunger on the
European decision not to import GE foods. European leaders
are downright confused by this accusation, pointing out that
the US currently ranks 22nd in the percentage of its gross
national income devoted to foreign aid - the lowest of any
industrial nation.Learn more -- http://www.organicconsumers.org/ge/rifkin060203.cfm

BULLIES ABORIGINAL TRIBE Starbucks, a self-proclaimed
promoter of fair trade, is suing an indigenous owned cafe
in a tiny B.C. town over the restaurant's name "Haida
Bucks". According to Darren Swanson, the store owner,
"Aboriginal men are called bucks. The three aboriginal
partners are all Haidas. That's how we came up with the name"
Swanson said that as a matter of principle, instead of changing
the restaurant name, he'd rather use the little money he has
left over to fight Starbucks, which raked in $3.3 billion
dollars in revenue last year. Get involved -- http://www.organicconsumers.org/starbucks/
