For Thought We are
coming into a new year and much is in a stte of crisis. What if we were to decide
to support the things we want in our world things that support our imagined futures.
What if we made this year the year we took steps, regardless of how small, toward
creating the world desired. Donations could be made to Local Food, or to the
Organic Consumers Association.
Our donations help to fuel this work. Support
efforts toward creating a peaceful society. Please support peace making efforts
in your community, donate to Green
Dove Network, Local Food, Poets for Peace, the Green Dove Peace Magazine or
Green Dove's Poetry anthology. Peacemaking needs your contributions | What
is Slow Food? Recently,
we have been asked, "What is Slow Food"? According to a statement from
Slow Food Bloomington, "The opposite of fast food, an international movement
that emphasizes eating seasonally, regionally, and pleasurably". Recognizing
the importance of how we enjoy our food, Slow Food U.S.A. is being developed as
an educational organization dedicated to promoting stewardship of the land and
ecologically sound food production; reviving the kitchen and the table as the
centers of pleasure, culture and community; invigorating and proliferating regional,
seasonal culinary traditions; creating a collaborative, ecologically-oriented,
and virtuous globalization; and living a slower and more ecologically-oriented
and virtuous globalization; and living a slower and more harmonious rhythm of
life.

New Patent Law: A Declaration of
War Against Farmers
PRESS RELEASE /
Focus on the Global South and GRAIN 15oct04 [More on Monsanto] http://www.mindfully.org/Pesticide/d Monsanto-Roundup-Glyphosate.htm
When former
Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) administrator L. Paul Bremer III left Baghdad
after the so-called "transfer of sovereignty" in June 2004, he left
behind the 100 orders he enacted as chief of the occupation authority in Iraq.
Among them is Order 81 on "Patent, Industrial Design, Undisclosed Information,
Integrated Circuits and Plant Variety." [1] This order amends Iraq's original
patent law of 1970 and unless and until it is revised or repealed by a new Iraqi
government, it now has the status and force of a binding law. [2] With important
implications for farmers and the future of agriculture in Iraq, this order is
yet another important component in the United States' attempts to radically transform
Iraq's economy.
WHO
GAINS? For generations, small farmers in Iraq operated in an essentially unregulated,
informal seed supply system. Farm-saved seed and the free innovation with and
exchange of planting materials among farming communities has long been the basis
of agricultural practice. This has been made illegal under the new law. Read

you know ? - Once
GMO's are released into the environment they can never be recalled.
- We
have been eating GMO food since 1996
- The
United States grows 75% of the world's genetically engineered crops
- Most

- Labeling

US
At the top of the
world wide news is Genetic Engineering of the food we eat. Altering genetic makeup
of species undermines and destroys the genetic foundation of agricultural systems
world wide. Local Food believes that with the use of world altering technologies
being applied to what we eat, that it is a small thing to ask that all GE foods
and modified food products be labled. Monsanto and other American mega food corporations
are spending six million to defeat the measure. Local Food supports your right
to know what you are consuming and support the choice of consumers being knowledgeable
about their food. The Organic
Consumers Association have been lobbying against these giants with less than
$150,000, yet the volunteer effort is strong and excellent work is resulting.
Of course they can use your help. Much information can be found on the subject
of GE foods at Genetically

about Genetically Modified Organisms in the food chain. The

Plant Growers Show Samples of U.S.-Grown Chinese Herbs
By
Jean Giblette Coordinator, Steering Committee, Medicinal Herb Consortium
Small
bags of jie geng, gou qi zi, ze lan, huang bai and a few dozen other dried samples
of Chinese medicinal herbs have been eliciting oohs and ahhs from practitioners
this autumn. The material tends to be more brightly colored and aromatic than
the usual herbal dispensary product. That's because it was harvested in September
and October at many small farms around the United States, to be presented directly
to herbal practitioners. Click

Mandela
quote The following quote from
Nelson Mandela is from his Inaugural speech in 1994: "Our deepest fear
is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond
measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves,
who am I to be brilliant, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to
be? You are a child of God. You 'playing small' doesn't serve the world. There's
nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around
you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not
just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously
give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own
fear, our presence automatically liberates others." |

| Why
drink Shade Grown Coffee? When
you drink shade grown coffee, you know that the coffee is grown with attention
to the soil, the land and its inhabitants. On a typical shade grown farm you will
find the coffee trees grown beneath a taller canopy of trees that provide protection
protection for the coffee and are beneficial to the soil. Equal
Exchange creates and develops long-term relationships with growers in Mexico,
El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Columbia, Peru and Tanzania.
These relations are health to the environment, local wildlife, migratory birds
and to the farmers. Farmers participating in these growing communities have the
opportunity to end cycles of poverty and exposture to chemical fertilizers and
pesticides and preserve the land and soil for future generations. In
Bloomington you can purchase Equal Exchange Coffee at the Runcible Spoon, Soma,
Bloomingfoods, and other locations around town. If you sell or serve Equal Exchange
coffee and would like to be added to our list, please send information to Local
Food. | |
